Having celebrated the musical years of the 70s to 90s, Munich Airport presented a new theme for this year's Roadshow featuring elements and members from the original Cologne ensemble of the musical “Moulin Rouge.” The premiere took place on July 8 in Stuttgart in front of approximately 150 freight forwarders, followed by additional shows in Nuremberg and Munich.

In June this year, Cathay Pacific, one of the world's leading airlines, launched flights between Munich and Hong Kong. The renowned Asian carrier connects these economic hubs four times a week, using a modern, fuel-efficient Airbus A350-900. Munich Airport's new winter schedule 2025/2026 came into effect end of October, offering travelers 184 destinations worldwide served by 81 airlines. Highlights include new and returning long-haul routes from Lufthansa and Discover AIrlines, plus continued connections to major Asian hubs. 

Cargo volumes are climbing fast, with growth far outpacing the national average and momentum accelerating into November 2025. With major apron expansions scheduled for 2026 and further large-scale developments already in the planning pipeline, we are gearing up to meet the surging demand from top logistics players.

The Christmas and winter market, a long-standing tradition, will open on Friday, November 14, at the Munich Airport Center (MAC). From now until December 28, 2025, travelers from all over the world, visitors, and employees are invited to linger, enjoy, and marvel.  

Every day an average of 1,000 aircraft take off and land at Munich Airport. When winter weather hits this precisely timed system, it can have a big impact on the closely coordinated processes that keep traffic moving.

To ensure safe operations around the clock even in winter weather conditions, Munich Airport has a winter service in place from the beginning of November to mid-April. The winter service team is deployed at the airport in icy and snowy conditions. It comprises 184 vehicles, 152 of which are used to clear and de-ice the airfield, and 32 for roads, paths, and parking areas in the public area.

Parallel to the time change at the end of October, the new winter flight schedule will take effect. From October 26, 2025, to March 28, 2026, travelers will have a total of 184 destinations in 68 countries to choose from. Eleven of these destinations are in Germany, 119 are medium-haul destinations, and 54 are long-haul destinations. A total of 81 airlines will operate these routes during the winter season.

Even before its official end on October 25, the summer flight schedule period at Munich Airport is already showing an impressive development. Between March 31 and October 12, the airport recorded a growth of five percent in both passenger numbers and flight movements compared to the previous year. 

The airport subsidiary AeroGround and Lufthansa have signed a new, long-term handling agreement. This agreement is retroactive from November 1, 2024, and ends on October 31, 2031. 

Munich Airport has kicked off Oktoberfest season together with Bavarian Minister of State for Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Tourism Michaela Kaniber, Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and Lufthansa Hub Manager Heiko Reitz. In Terminal 2, traditional costume groups from the Isargau Trachtenverband e. V. and Lufthansa’s traditional costume crew got everyone in the mood for the 190th “Wiesn” (Oktoberfest).

In parking garage P44, opposite the LabCampus innovation hub in the northwest of the airport, Bavaria’s largest charging park to date was inaugurated today in the presence of Bavarian State Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Munich Airport, Minister of State for Finance and Home Affairs Albert Füracker, and Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers.

Food concepts at Munich Airport receive several prizes. At this year's "FAB Awards – Airport Food & Beverage + Hospitality Conference & Awards", which took place on 25 and 26 June in Barcelona, three concepts from Allresto, the gastronomy subsidiary of Munich Airport, were recognized with three awards. Yesterday in Athens, the winners of the annual ACI Europe Best Airport Awards were revealed and celebrated at ACI Europe’s 35th Annual Congress and General Assembly. With these awards the airport association honors airports that have made a significant contribution to the development of the airport industry. 

Today marks the first time that the five-star airline Cathay Pacific will offer flights between Munich and Hong Kong. The renowned Asian airline will connect these economic powerhouses four times a week — on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays — using a modern, fuel-efficient Airbus A350-900. 

On a cumulative basis, we were able to grow by 8.7 percent in the first quarter of 2025, while the German average declined by 1 percent. Our positive development in air freight is due to the increase in long-haul connections and the associated higher additional cargo capacity and we expect further cargo growth for us if the economy remains stable.

Starting today, Kazakh airline SCAT is flying from Munich Airport to its hub in Shymkent [CIT]. Flights depart twice a week from Munich Airport – on Tuesdays at 11:35 a.m. and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Operating a Boeing 737-800, Kazakhstan's largest private airline reaches the city in the south of the country in around six hours. The young companies were asked to develop solutions on the topics of "seamless travel experience", "sustainable aviation", "smart luggage revolution" and "AI-powered airports". GoodMaps won in the "Seamless Travel Experience" category. Janta Power succeeded in the "Sustainable Aviation" challenge, whereas the startup Pattern Labs was selected to pilot the "Smart Luggage Revolution" program.

Lufthansa is flying an Airbus A380 to Denver, USA, for the first time today. This is also a premiere for the third largest airport in the US, as it is the first time the airport is welcoming an aircraft of this size. Denver is Munich Airport's sister airport, a decades-long partnership based on the close economic and cultural ties between Bavaria and Colorado.

Starting May 1, Thomas Hoff Andersson (48) will join the management team of Munich Airport as Chief Operating Officer. In this newly created position, Thomas Hoff Andersson will be responsible for the operational management of the airport's complex handling processes, playing a key role in shaping the passenger experience at Bavaria's premium hub. He will also oversee Munich Airport’s subsidiaries AeroGround and Terminal 2.

Discover Airlines continues to expand its long-haul network from Munich Airport, with Calgary now added as a new destination. Canada's fourth-largest city, situated on the vast North American prairie, serves as an ideal gateway for outdoor adventures—thanks to its close proximity to Banff National Park in Alberta and the Rocky Mountains. Flights are scheduled to depart from Munich three times a week at 1:25 p.m.

Munich Airport was named "Best Airport in Central Europe" at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2025, which took place during the Passenger Terminal EXPO trade show in Madrid on April 9. In the global passenger survey conducted by the London-based aviation research institute Skytrax, Munich Airport came in ninth place. This makes it the only German airport among the top 10 in the global ranking.

Discover Airlines launched its second long-haul route from Munich on April 1: The airline is now servicing Windhoek in Namibia, following the launch of Orlando/Florida in March. The Lufthansa Group's leisure airline is thus expanding the Munich route network to Africa and developing its new long-haul base at Munich Airport. 

Munich Airport strengthens its international network

The Kazakh airline SCAT is opening a new flight route from Munich to Shymkent from 27 May 2025. The flights will be operated three times a week - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flight time is approximately six hours.

Munich AirportAcademy has been officially recognized as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) esteemed TRAINAIR PLUS Program (TPP). This important achievement was announced at the Global Implementation Support Symposium in Abu Dhabi, February 10-12, 2025. The certification acknowledges the Academy’s commitment to providing world-class aviation training and its alignment with ICAO’s rigorous standards for competency-based education.

At the start of the Lunar New Year, which has a special meaning in many Asian cultures, Munich Airport can boast successful figures on long-haul routes to the Far East: 2.6 million passengers travelled from and via Munich to eleven countries in Central, South and East Asia in 2024. That's an increase of 38.7% compared to the previous year. Last summer, there were 105 weekly departures, with Bangkok being the most popular destination of the year, followed by Singapore and Beijing.

In the first five weeks of this year, the giant freighter named “Beluga” will be a regular guest at Munich Airport. BelugaXL is based on the Airbus A330-200F. It owes its name to its whale-like appearance. The Beluga mainly transports aircraft components between the various Airbus sites.

Munich Airport welcomes 41.6 million passengers

Just in time for the start of the festive season, Santa Claus has landed in Munich from Rovaniemi in northern Finnish Lapland. Since December 3, the Norwegian airline Norwegian is offering direct flights between Munich and Rovaniemi on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The city on the Arctic Circle is considered the “official” hometown of Santa Claus and is home to the popular Santa Claus Village - a year-round highlight for children and adults alike. 

The Asian premium airline Cathay Pacific today announced that flights between the economic metropolis of Hong Kong and the Bavarian state capital will be introduced from mid-June 2025. As of then, it will be possible to fly four times a week to the city of over seven million inhabitants in southeastern China, at around lunchtime on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, on a modern and fuel-efficient Airbus A350-900.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) will be a new tenant of LabCampus GmbH, Munich Airport’s innovation campus. The university of excellence is not only moving into around 20,400 m² of the innovation hub at Munich Airport, but is also establishing a “Convergence Center” there, among other things. The new TUM Convergence Center creates a unique ecosystem in which students, scientific talents, founding teams, business partners, and citizens can work together in an integrative and innovative way on pioneering projects. 

Munich AirportAcademy and Istanbul Airport's IGA Academy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aiming to jointly develop innovative training programs and take education in the aviation industry to a new level. This collaboration will enable both academies to meet the changing needs of the aviation industry and provide students with a more comprehensive learning experience. 

The "Airports for Innovation" (A4I) initiative was launched in 2021 by the Spanish airport group Aena and Aeroporti di Roma. Munich Airport is now also a new member of this network, along with seven other airports: Athens International Airport, Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur, Dallas Fort Worth Airport, Vancouver International Airport, Dubai International Airport, Narita Airport and Oman Airports. 

At the end of the Bavarian summer holidays, Munich Airport can report strong traffic figures: 6.2 million passengers used the airport in the past six weeks, ten percent more than in the previous year. The peak day was Sunday, September 1st – on that day 143,000 passengers used Munich Airport. The high demand for air travel was also reflected in the utilization of the aircraft: This was 86 percent during the holidays - an absolute record value. 

Airbräu, the brewery at Munich Airport, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. A week of festivities awaits visitors, chock full of anniversary offers and a varied program of music, a Ferris wheel, a wheat beer-themed event carousel and culinary highlights through September 15th, 2024.

Another step towards "Net Zero 2035", the sustainability strategy of Munich Airport, has been taken: MAN Truck & Bus Germany has delivered the first ten electric solo passenger buses to AeroGround Flughafen München GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Munich Airport. A further 27 electric buses of MAN Lion's City E 12 and E 18 models will be put into operation by the end of the year. There is an option to purchase 25 additional buses.

Long-haul non-stop flights between Munich Airport and destinations in the USA have undergone an enormous development and are continuing to grow. When the airport opened in 1992, there were 39 departures to five destinations each week. Today, there are 140 departures to 14 different airports. Yesterday, on Monday, the airport recorded the 50-millionth passenger to travel on the non-stop service to the United States since the airport was established.

For Munich Airport, 2023 was characterized by the further recovery of air traffic after the coronavirus pandemic and, above all, a return to profitability.  Entitled "MOVING OUR WORLD", the 14th integrated report that Munich Airport has now published highlights the key developments that took place in 2023.

More than 19 million passengers in the first half of the year - flights at record load factor

Munich Airport International (MAI), the consulting subsidiary of Munich Airport, hosted a three-week training program for members of Hamad International Airport's (DOH) national talent development program 'ENJAZ'.

The new connection to Bahrain expands the wide range of flights between Munich and the Gulf States, which is also of great importance for tourism in Bavaria.

Between June and September, long periods of heat are often followed by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. More than 100,000 thunderstorms descend on Germany every year. Munich Airport is also affected.

FlyLili launched its first flight from Brasov to Munich on June 28, 2024. The Romanian airline now offers scheduled flights to Brasov, located on the edge of the Carpathian Mountains, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Flight FL1001 lands in Munich at 08:10 and flies back to Romania from Terminal 1 as FL1002 at 09:20.

Munich Airport and Lufthansa Airlines are launching a new partnership with Miles & More. This unique cooperation between an airport, an airline and a loyalty program offers travelers and visitors to Munich Airport an even more attractive shopping experience. From now on, participants can collect and redeem miles in many stores at the airport.

An innovative system for sustainable energy generation is currently in use at Munich Airport: a container with photovoltaic panels and wind rotors from FlowGen, a company specializing in green energy system solutions. In cooperation with Munich Airport, the mobile energy container is being used to charge electric vehicles.

The new pier at Terminal 1 of Munich Airport is progressing rapidly: after the exterior façade was completed last year, the interior fit-out is currently making great strides.

Lufthansa Cargo is expanding its operations at the southern German hub and will be operating freighters from the hub for the first time from 6 July 2024. An A321 freighter will connect Munich with Istanbul Airport twice a week, complementing the existing belly network from Munich. The new freighter connection is planned every Saturday and Sunday with flight numbers LH8350 / LH8351 and LH8346 / LH8347. Lufthansa Cargo customers can book their shipments on the new route with immediate effect.

On Friday afternoon, 218 passengers flew with Lufthansa from Munich to Seattle for the first time. The airline is now offering three weekly flights from Munich to the US metropolis on the Pacific using the most sustainable long-haul aircraft, an Airbus A350. This makes Seattle its fifth destination on North America's West Coast after San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver.

Munich Airport International GmbH (MAI) and its subsidiary, Munich Airport NJ LLC (MANJ) Operators of Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), are proud to announce that EWR Terminal A was recognized as the “World’s Best New Airport Terminal,” during the 2024 Skytrax World Airport Awards held at the Passenger Terminal Expo & Conference in Frankfurt, Germany. 

Thanks to significant passenger growth of 17 percent, Munich Airport (FMG) recorded a positive annual result (EAT) of EUR 25 million for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Revenue increased to approximately EUR 1.4 billion. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) moved back into the positive range for the first time since 2019 at EUR 115 million. 

Munich Airport continued its recovery in first quarter of 2023, with around seven million passengers counted between January and March. This was 70% more than in the same period of the previous year. Due to the restrictions on international travel as a result of the pandemic, only a little over four million passengers had used Munich Airport for a flight in the first quarter of 2021. 

Delta Airlines, one of the world's largest airlines and one of Munich Airport's first customers, is now offering another destination from Munich to the USA. John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York is served on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The high passenger demand for flights to the USA has prompted.

Munich Airport International GmbH (MAI) and its subsidiary, Munich Airport NJ LLC (MANJ), today announced Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) was awarded a 5-Star Airport Terminal Rating from Skytrax, the air travel industry’s premier rating organization. 

Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, will launch four weekly flights from Bahrain to Munich from July 01, 2024. With an Airbus A321neo, Gulf Air will fly from Bahrain International Airport to Munich Airport on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Gulf Air arrives in Munich at 06:35 and departs for Bahrain at 12:20. Flights on this route are now available for booking.

With the opening of “O2 SURFTOWN MUC” near Munich Airport in the summer of 2024, Allresto, the catering subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), will be operating a restaurant in a partnership outside the airport campus for the first time. Inspired by the idea that the restaurant is not just a place to eat but also an “observation post” with a view of the lively surfing activity in the surf park’s wave pool, the name “Lookout” was chosen. 

The Michelin-starred restaurant at Munich Airport has reconfirmed its status: The Michelin star for the “Mountain Hub Gourmet” at the Hilton Munich Airport has now been awarded to head chef Marcel Tauschek (right), restaurant manager Karim Zarif, and their crew. The gourmet restaurant was awarded a Michelin star for the first time in 2022.

The Scandinavian airline Norwegian is expanding its range of flights from Munich with immediate effect. In addition to its three Scandinavian destinations of Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen, it will begin serving Alicante and Malaga again from the start of April, having suspended flights to these destinations during COVID.

Discover Airlines, a recent addition to the Lufthansa Group, is launching an extensive range of flights from Munich Airport to numerous vacation destinations in time for the summer 2024 flight schedule. Discover Airlines, which bills itself as a “leisure airline”, is stationing five Airbus A320s at Munich Airport for this purpose. 

On Sunday, March 31, 2024, Munich Airport launches its summer flight schedule, which this year runs until Saturday, October 26. The airlines have announced more than 3,300 departures per week for this seven-month period, approximately twelve percent more than in summer 2023.

Munich Airport can look back on a successful year in air freight in 2023. According to data from the German Airports Association (ADV), Munich Airport was the only major German airport to record growth in freight transportation in 2023. 

Direct flights can be booked effective immediately: Vietnam Airlines will take off from Munich Airport for the first time at the start of the 2024/25 winter flight schedule at the end of October. In so doing, the airline is expanding its Asian flight program from Munich and will fly passengers twice a week to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The airline will use either an Airbus A350-900 or a Boeing B787-9 for these new flights.

Munich Airport and South Korea's Incheon Airport Corporation (IIAC) are embarking on an intensive cooperation in the field of aviation training. Hag Jae Lee, CEO of Seoul Airport, and Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Munich Airport’s “Airport Academy”.

A total of nine airlines are currently planning 107 weekly flights to 14 destinations in ten countries in East and South Asia. Before the pandemic, in the 2019 summer schedule, there were 101 flights operated by five airlines to ten destinations in seven countries.

After a break of almost four years due to the pandemic, Air China has resumed flights between Munich Airport and the Chinese business metropolis of Shanghai as of today. Modern and efficient Airbus A350-900 long-haul aircraft are being operated three times a week. 

The ongoing positive development at Munich Airport is clearly reflected in the traffic figures for 2023. Passenger numbers rose by five million year-on-year to a total of 37 million. With its current passenger volume, Munich Airport has reached around 80% of the record level from the pre-crisis year 2019. The number of aircraft movements rose by six percent compared to 2022 to more than 300,000 take-offs and landings. The seat load factor reached a record level of 81.3 percent, thereby exceeding 80 percent for the first time since the airport opened.

The objective is clear: Munich Airport has set the target of a 60 percent reduction in the airport's CO2 emissions by 2030, with the remaining 40 percent to be offset by appropriate climate protection measures. This applies to all emissions subject to the airport’s influence, for example those caused by vehicles or the airport's own CHP (combined heat and power) generating station

Safety is the top priority: High above the ground in Munich Airport's 78-meter tower, air traffic controllers and ramp controllers guide up to 90 aircraft from the ground to the sky and back every hour, while a weather observer keeps track of winds and visibility. Munich Airport continues to pile up records: In 2019 total traffic increased by 1.7 million, or 4 percent, to 47.9 million passengers. That was the largest increase posted by any German airport last year.

From November 15 until December 29, 2019, Munich Airport's MAC Forum was once again transformed into a winter wonderland – for the 21st time.  Amid the pine forest surrounding the big ice rink, visitors from near and far enjoyed seasonal treats and plenty of good cheer daily from 11 am to 9 pm. Munich Airport reported a successful 2018 operating year at its annual press conference in Munich today: The 3.8 percent increase in traffic to a total of 46.3 million passengers flying to and from Munich, and the resulting gains in aviation and non-aviation revenues had a decisive impact on the increase in Group sales, which – based on preliminary figures – topped the 1.5 billion euro mark for the first time.

With a pilot project in Terminal 2, the Southern Bavaria Aviation Office is ushering in a new era in passenger screening: The advanced technology installed in the two spacious testing lanes eliminates the need for passengers to take out permitted liquids or laptops. 

Munich Airport is about to embark on a unique, future-focused project. Under the name LabCampus, the airport will develop an interdisciplinary idea and innovation center on the airport campus. 

She is 120 centimeters tall, with sparkling, round eyes and a pleasant voice: Starting today, "Josie Pepper" the robot will be answering questions for passengers in Terminal 2. Whether they need directions to their gate or want to stop at a certain restaurant or shop – Josie Pepper will look them in the eyes and give them a prompt answer

Lufthansa announced plans to station five Airbus A380 widebody airliners at its Munich hub in the summer of next year. By deploying the world's largest passenger aircraft, Lufthansa will not only substantially boost its capacity on long-haul routes to and from Munich, but will also establish a new premium service for passengers using Munich Airport. 

Munich Airport's midfield terminal is celebrating a birthday: On Wednesday, April 26, 2017 the Terminal 2 satellite building will be one year old. The results to date are impressive: In the first year, the midfield terminal – the first to be built at a German airport – has handled more than 74,000 flights. One in five of the roughly 9 million passengers to use the facility since it opened on April 26, 2016 have travelled on intercontinental routes. The satellite terminal is a continuation of the successful joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa. It has increased the capacity of Terminal 2, which is used by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners, by 11 million to 36 million passengers per year.

Munich Airport and Lufthansa can bask in the glory of a highly coveted accolade: At the 2017 World Airports Award, announced by the London-based Skytrax Institute, Munich Airport's Terminal 2 was honored as the world's number one terminal. The rankings are based on a survey of 14 million passengers around the world. Terminal 2, which opened in 2003, now includes the new satellite facility that went into operation last April. The completion of the expansion project has increased Terminal 2's capacity from 11 million to 36 million passengers per year. The new building has 27 pierside stands, providing passengers with direct access to their aircraft with no need for a bus transfer. Terminal 2 is jointly operated by Munich Airport and Lufthansa as a 60:40 partnership.

Another chapter in the history of Munich Airport will begin on April 26, 2016: with the launch of the new satellite terminal – Germany's first midfield terminal - Europe's only five-star airport is again setting new standards for excellent service, passenger comfort and sustainability. The satellite terminal is also a continuation of the successful joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa. As in Terminal 2, the partners have joined forces to design, build and finance the new passenger handling facility on a 60:40 basis.

Spectacular launch on April 22, 2016 for the new satellite at Munich Airport: With ease and elegance, artists brought the new terminal building to life with a specially staged choreography. A total of around 1,900 guests followed the spectacle around the apron tower. The show was kicked off by the "hosts" of the satellite, who launched the satellite with symbolic thrust levers.

April 2016 sees the opening of the new satellite terminal at Munich Airport, with which the airport will gain a passenger terminal that sets new environmental and energy efficiency standards. The very latest building materials and innovative heating, cooling and lighting technologies will ensure that energy usage is reduced to a minimal level: CO2 emissions generated by the building will be 40% lower than those emitted by the airport’s existing terminal buildings. Contributing to this reduction are the “climate façades”, found on the longitudinal sides of the building, which enable passengers (via escalators) to change between the building’s three passenger levels.

Quiet zones, showers near the gates and baby changing tables in the men's and women's restrooms: A wide range of new and attractive services and amenities will await passengers in Munich Airport's new satellite terminal, which is due to open in April 2016. All of the waiting areas are tailored to individual needs, for example with quiet zones featuring comfortable reclining seating. And those who want to use the time productively will appreciate the free WLAN access as well as the plentiful electric outlets and USB connections. For families with children, the well-marked play areas will let the little ones expend their excess energy before boarding.
