Passenger and baggage checks at Munich Airport are becoming safer, faster and more convenient. In time for the Whitsun break, Bavaria is putting five new computed tomography (CT) scanners into operation in Terminals 1 and 2. 

Munich Airport continued its recovery in first quarter of 2023, with around seven million passengers counted between January and March. This was 70% more than in the same period of the previous year. Due to the restrictions on international travel as a result of the pandemic, only a little over four million passengers had used Munich Airport for a flight in the first quarter of 2021. 

From June 1, 2023, Lufthansa will again operate the A380 in regular service. First to Boston, and from July 4, 2023 also to New York to John F. Kennedy Airport.

Japan's largest airline ANA and member of the Star Alliance, is returning to Munich Airport after a pandemic-related break. With the start of the summer flight schedule, the 5-star airline is thus resuming its nonstop connection from Munich to Tokyo's city-near Haneda Airport.

With the removal of many pandemic-related travel restrictions, the airlines at Munich Airport are offering significantly more connections in the upcoming summer flight schedule than we have seen for the last two years.

Although Munich Airport’s traffic figures for the first quarter of 2022 were still heavily marked by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a clear upward trend could be seen in the first three months of the new year as compared to 2021, with over four million passengers counted between January and March.

A total of 630 winter service employees at Munich Airport are on standby around the clock to ensure safe flight operations in snowy and icy conditions. In January 2022 alone, the busiest month of the current winter season, winter services had to be called out on 21 days. Since October 15 - the start of the current season - there have been a total of 43 days.

Munich offers a new cargo connection to Beijing. Today, a Boeing 777 of Air China has landed at Bavaria's aviation hub. From now on, Air China will connect Munich and Beijing six times per week carrying automotive supplies, among other things. 

Following a break of more than a year, Lufthansa is resuming its scheduled service to Delhi today. The service to the Indian capital will be operated three times a week with modern Airbus A350 long-haul aircraft. 

Munich Airport welcomes a further increase in so-called cargo-only services. As of today, Qatar Airways is operating regular flights to and from Munich with a cargo version of its Boeing 777. The routing starts in Bangalore, India, and leads via Qatar's capital Doha to Munich and then on to Chicago. On the return flight, in exactly the opposite rotation, the freighter reaches Munich every Tuesday. Qatar Airways operates this service on behalf of the international logistics provider DB Schenker. 

The 2021 traffic figures for Munich Airport are still heavily marked by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic: Passenger numbers rose by 1.4 million more than twelve percent to a total of 12.5 million passengers. That said, this passenger volume represents only slightly over a quarter of the airport's record results for 2019 before the pandemic.

The first snowfall of the new year occurred last weekend. In order to ensure safe flight operations even under these weather conditions, Munich Airport has a winter service team standing by from early November to mid-April. In the event of ice and snow, the airport’s winter maintenance convoy moves out. It comprises 181 vehicles, including 66 tractors from the surrounding area. 

After five years of planning, developing and commissioning the new Honduran capital airport Palmerola International Airport, the first scheduled flights took off and the first passengers were welcomed recently. On December 11, the airport greeted Spirit Airlines as the first scheduled carrier with daily flights from Houston and four weekly flights from Miami. By now, a total of five airlines are operating international flights to Palmerola International Airport. United Airlines offers a daily service to Houston, American Airlines connects Palmerola twelve times per week with Miami and three times weekly with Dallas. Copa Airlines operates daily flights to Panama City and Avianca takes off daily to El Salvador and four times weekly to Guatemala City. Starting from January 2022, Spirit Airlines plans to add further flights to Ford Lauderdale and AeroMexico intends to introduce flights to Mexico City.

Starting tomorrow, the US carrier American Airlines will fly from Munich to Charlotte for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic in March last year. 

After a longer suspension of its scheduled flights due to the pandemic, Delta Air Lines now again operates four weekly long-haul services with Boeing 767-400 aircraft to its traffic hub in the U.S. state of Georgia.

The decision announced by Lufthansa today to station four additional, state-of-the-art long-haul Airbus A350s at its Bavarian hub has been welcomed by Flughafen München GmbH (FMG).

The end today of strict US entry restrictions for European travelers has further boosted transatlantic travel at Munich Airport, with Lufthansa today resuming flights to Miami for the first time in addition to the routes it has already begun operating again this year. Flights from Munich will land in the major Florida city again for the first time since the route was halted in March 2020 and will operate three times a week in the winter flight schedule.

Munich Airport is launching a unique and long-term climate-protection project: FMG has come to an agreement with the Count Arco’sche Forest Administration to turn existing forests in eastern Bavaria into “climate forests” that store as much carbon dioxide as possible. Traffic at Munich Airport has risen steadily since the beginning of the summer months. While only 570,000 passengers were registered at Munich Airport in the first quarter of the year due to the global Covid-19 pandemic and resulting travel restrictions, this figure more than tripled in August alone to over 1.8 million. At his visit to the Munich Press Club, the CEO of Flughafen München GmbH, Jost Lammers, added that passenger demand is still high after the end of the summer holidays. 

Three years after the official groundbreaking ceremony for the extension of the rail tunnel at Munich Airport, which will provide a link for rail traffic between Freising and Erding running via the airport, the shell has now been completed on schedule. The tunnel already in place, which ended at the Terminal 2 satellite building, has been extended eastward to allow trains and S-Bahn light rail services to pass through the airport. Munich Airport is spending a total of EUR 115 million on the construction work, which has now finished. This morning, Albert Füracker, the Bavarian finance minister and also chairman of the Munich Airport Supervisory Board, Bavarian transport minister Kerstin Schreyer and Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers visited the completed tunnel shell, which represents a key contribution by Munich Airport to the construction of the Erding loop.  

Airlines are gradually increasing the number of flights offered at Munich Airport, which had been reduced as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. The number of destinations served regularly from Munich has now risen to over 170. This represents around 80 percent of the destinations that were on the flight schedule in 2019, the year before the crisis.

Europe's best airport, the best terminal in the world – and now yet another accolade for Munich Airport: In a new audit carried out by the London-based Skytrax Institute, Bavaria's gateway to the world has successfully defended its title as Europe's first and only five-star airport. In May 2015 the Bavarian hub was granted the five-star airport title for the first time. Before that, the only airports to earn the top rating of five stars were in Asia: Singapore, Seoul, Hong Kong and Tokio-Haneda. They were joined in January 2017 by Doha Airport. Munich has now successfully defended its title: Experts from the Skytrax Institute returned to scrutinize the quality of the services and the overall passenger experience and once again awarded Munich Airport the five-star seal of approval. The auditors' conclusion: Munich Airport not only maintained its outstanding quality, but actually improved on it.

The volume of traffic at Munich Airport is beginning to soar once again. For the first time in more than a year, Munich Airport counted over 50,000 passengers on two days in July. Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) is anticipating that the number of air travelers for the entire month of July will surpass the one-million mark. 

Germany is hit by many hundreds of thousands of lightning strikes every year. The probability of an individual person being struck by lightning is extremely low. Nevertheless, cases of serious injury serve as a continued reminder of the risk posed by lightning during severe thunderstorms.

Argo AI's autonomous vehicles will begin testing at Munich Airport on an asphalted area of around 55,000 square meters. Around four months after the start of construction work, the management of Munich Airport has now been able to hand over the preliminary test track of the new development site, which was completed on schedule. In the course of the construction work, 220 cubic meters of concrete were used, cable conduits with a total length of 16,000 meters were laid and a fence more than one kilometer long was erected. Among other things, 16 LED floodlight masts, each 18 meters high, are used to illuminate the facility. Effective immediately, the British carrier is providing a nonstop connection between Bavaria’s hub and London City Airport. Passengers can depart daily for the UK capital with an Embraer E190 airliner. The flight takes around two hours. Now, Munich is connected to five London airports.

Audi has yet to start shipping the first units to customers in Germany. But the new, fully electric Audi e-tron car has already landed at Munich Airport – in a multi-storey meteorite. From now until mid-March, passengers and visitors to the airport can experience the new vehicle and its innovative technology in a 630 square meter display space in the Munich Airport Center (MAC) between Terminal 1 and 2.
