EVA Air insights - interview with Willy Lo, General Manager for Germany

EVA Air has now been operating successfully at Munich Airport for over three years, offering four weekly nonstop flights to and from Taipei. Willy Lo, General Manager for Germany (based at Munich Airport), reflects on this period in an exclusive interview and discusses the next step – an increase in capacity – which is also of great interest to the cargo sector.

EVA Air is operating four weekly flights to Munich for the first time since November 2022. Are you satisfied with the developments to date including the cargo sector?

We are very pleased with the consistent growth and strong performance since our launch in 2022. Despite increased operational costs and longer routing times caused by geopolitical tensions in both Ukraine and the Middle East, the market demand between Taiwan and Bavaria has shown remarkable resilience. To proactively address this momentum, we are excited to upgauge our Munich service from the Boeing 787 to the 777-300ER starting April 23, 2026. This strategic transition significantly boosts our belly-cargo capacity, reflecting our long-term commitment and unwavering confidence in the Munich market.

What expectations do you have for further development in our Munich cargo hub?

We envision Munich further solidifying its role as a strategic gateway for the Taiwan-Germany high-tech supply chain. With the progression of the ESMC (TSMC) semiconductor plant in Dresden, Munich’s dual role as a premier R&D hub and a logistics powerhouse is more critical than ever. We expect this to drive a substantial increase in air cargo demand for precision machinery, semiconductor components, and high-value electronics. Leveraging the expanded capacity of our Boeing 777 fleet, EVA Air aims to bridge the gap between Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem and Germany’s industrial heartland, ensuring a seamless and reliable logistics flow for these vital industries.

Is there anything you would particularly like to highlight in the cargo sector at Munich Airport?

I would particularly like to highlight Munich Airport’s exceptional reliability in handling highly professionalized and specialized cargo. As an airline holding the triple IATA CEIV certifications (Pharma, Fresh, and Live Animals), we maintain extremely rigorous standards for ground handling precision. The airport’s state-of-the-art temperature-controlled facilities and expert handling teams align perfectly with our requirements for Cold Chain logistics and high-value specialized shipments. This synergy in 'Quality and Professionalism' is the cornerstone of our ability to maintain global service excellence for our most demanding clients.
