An important milestone has been reached for the “Cargo Handling Area Expansion” project at Munich Airport: The detailed design has been successfully completed, and the construction contract has been awarded. The contract was awarded to the bidding consortium consisting of Richard Schulz Tiefbau GmbH & Co. KG and Kurt Motz Bau GmbH. Construction began in mid-April 2026.
General planning for this technically demanding project is being carried out by GAUFF Engineering. The scope of work includes the design of civil engineering structures, traffic facilities and the technical equipment for high‑voltage systems.
In the southern cargo area of the airport, a new cargo staging area covering approximately 15,000 square meters of asphalt is being developed on a previously partially unpaved section. In addition to the site preparation, the project includes - among other things - the planning of drainage systems, energy and lighting infrastructure, conduit routes for operational systems, as well as markings and signage. Existing traffic infrastructure has also been adapted to align with the new site layout.
Construction is taking place while flight operations continue, placing particularly high demands on planning and construction processes. Project partners include act‑technik GmbH and Richter Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH.
The project has been underway since September 2025 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Once completed, the expanded area will create the basis for further growth in cargo volumes at Munich Airport.
