Press: Munich Airport and Lufthansa optimize operations and reliability

Analysis and action plan presented

27.02.2026

On the night of February 19-20, 2026, flight operations at Munich Airport were severely restricted due to heavy snowfall and the need to clear the runways several times. Passengers in six aircraft that were ready for takeoff were particularly affected. Ultimately, they were not given permission to take off in the early morning hours.

At a press conference on Friday, February 27, 2026, Thomas Hoff Andersson, Chief Operating Officer at Munich Airport, and Heiko Reitz, Lufthansa Hub Manager Munich, presented the results of their cause analysis and the improvement measures derived from it.

The events were not due to a single error or technical malfunction, but rather to an unfortunate chain of circumstances. Based on the analysis, Munich Airport and Lufthansa have agreed on a comprehensive package of measures, the implementation of which has already begun. In the following video of the press conference and in the FAQs below, you will find concise answers to the most important questions.
