Press:  Satellite building has been in successful operation for ten years

93 million passengers since 2016 for Munich Airport and Lufthansa

April 27, 2026

Ten years ago, on April 26, 2016, Terminal 2 Satellite opened at Munich Airport. Since its opening, approximately 93 million passengers have used the facility, and a total of about 672,000 flight movements have been handled. Within the Terminal 2 system, this area accounts for around 30 percent of takeoffs and landings as well as 36 percent of passengers. The proportion of transfer passengers is approximately 56 percent.

The Satellite is part of the joint venture between Munich Airport and Deutsche Lufthansa AG. The partners invested approximately 900 million euros in the project. Construction began in 2011. Since it opened, the airport has expanded the facility to include, among other things, EasyPASS checkpoints, systems for entry and exit registration (EES), and additional service areas.

The Terminal 2 system is used exclusively by the Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance airlines. In particular, the satellite handles a large number of long-haul connections to India, Asia, and North America.

After passing through security in Terminal 2, passengers can reach the Satellite in about one minute via the airport’s own automated metro system. As Germany’s first midfield terminal, the Satellite building has also set new standards in sustainability and efficiency: for instance, it reduces emissions by approximately 30 percent compared to the main Terminal 2 building.

Spanning more than 7,000 square meters, the facility features 15 retail spaces, seven restaurants and cafés, and three duty-free areas. In addition, there are five lounges covering over 4,000 square meters, as well as amenities such as rest areas, showers, children’s play areas, and much more. At the center is an open marketplace surrounding the apron tower. The thematically designed market stalls evoke the atmosphere of Munich’s Viktualienmarkt and are modeled after it. Furthermore, the satellite features panoramic windows with views of the Alps and a bar offering a view of the apron.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport emphasizes: “Ten years of the Satellite are part of our shared success story in the joint venture. The partnership with Lufthansa at Munich Airport is a major factor in stability and growth and enhances our visibility in the international competition among hubs. Bavaria and all of Germany benefit from this economic significance.”

Heiko Reitz, Member of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Airlines and Hub Manager Munich, adds: “With Terminal 2 and the satellite building, we offer our guests all the amenities of a premium hub. In the future, there will be even more space for a 5-star offering at Munich Airport: The further development of the building together with our partner Munich Airport is already in the planning stages. The opening is scheduled for 2035 and will strengthen the Lufthansa Hub and the expansion of our long-haul offerings.”
