Munich Airport sets a new benchmark in cargo automation

Autonomous freight transport

Since early 2026, Munich Airport has been pioneering the future of cargo logistics with a dedicated test zone for autonomous freight transport between the cargo area and the airfield. Together with Cargogate Munich Airport, we are setting new standards in efficiency, safety, and innovation – driving forward a smarter, more connected operational ecosystem.

At the heart of the initiative is an autonomous tractor designed to transport dollies from the freight hall to strategically placed airside collection points. This shall reduce distances for drivers, streamline workflows, and accelerate turnaround times.

The project follows a progressive test strategy: starting with routes restricted to the cargo area, the autonomous system has now expanded its operations through security control and onto the airfield. This step-by-step approach enables us to thoroughly evaluate real world interactions with freight handlers, security teams, and various ramp stakeholders – ensuring seamless integration into daily airport operations.

Our goal is to identify all the capabilities required for autonomous vehicles to operate safely, reliably, and efficiently within the airport environment. Equally important is the development of best-in-class processes for smooth, intuitive human–machine collaboration.

With this initiative, Munich Airport reinforces its position as a trailblazer in cargo innovation – combining cutting-edge technology with operational excellence to shape the logistics solutions of tomorrow.
