Winter Sports & Golfing

Winter Sports

Bavaria as an affordable winter sports destination is characterized by its multitude of ski resorts, each with its own charm and character, like the Spitzingsee skiing area, Garmisch- Partenkirchen, the Großer Arber and Allgäu's largest winter sport arenas in Oberstdorf. The slopes in the Bavarian Alps and the Bavarian Forest have everything the skier's heart desires: dizzying descents for the more advanced and gentle slopes for beginners, families and just-for-fun skiers.

Activities and events

Bavaria's winter resorts have something for everyone and are not the exclusive preserve of downhill skiers. Cross country trails, sled runs, snowshoe hikes, racing down an ice canal on the World Cup and World Champions' track at Königssee or the Salttimejourney in Berchtesgaden are just a taste of a wide range of activities. In the course of time, prevailing climatic and topographic conditions have caused Bavaria's skiing venues, such as Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berchtesgaden, Ruhpolding and Oberstdorf to specialize in certain sporting disciplines.

Culture and cities

The magic of the festive season is nowhere quite as evident as at the Christmas markets. The tempting aromas of mulled wine, sweet roasted almonds and gingerbread create an unforgettable atmosphere. Come and visit Bavaria's world-famous Christmas markets in Nuremberg, Kempten, Prien am Chiemsee and Regensburg, just to name a few.

Golfing around Lake Starnberg

When vacationing in the Lake Starnberg area, you will find over 10 golf courses within a vicinity of 25 km. Whether guests are looking to stay at a simple pension or a luxury hotel, service is always a huge priority as well as booking requested tee times. Some of the challenging golf courses are placed in the rolling moraine landscape of the Alpine foothills. Gut Rieden offers a flat area for the first nine holes, but then it gets hillier with well-placed bunkers and water hazards which require strategy. In order to remain focused, enjoy the splendid panorama over the Lake Starnberg in the clubhouse afterwards. In Tutzing, the course offers short distances from hole to hole and fantastic views of Wetterstein- and Karwendelmassif and their idyllic lakes and streams. The 18-hole championship course of Iffeldorf spans a total of 104 acres next to the Zugspitze. Here you can find wonderful nature with forests, ancient oak trees, small lakes and biotopes. Last but not least, the Golf Club Hohenpähl blends harmoniously on the hill between Lake Starnberg and Ammersee. This Golf Club is known for its sustainable handling with the scenic landscape and has won several environmental awards. Where golfers play today, Charlemagne spent his childhood – the corridors are part of the former High Castle Pähl.
