Lufthansa Cargo insights - interview with Ivo Seehann

Lufthansa Cargo celebrated the arrival of the first A321 freighter in Bavaria, marking the start of a service that connects Munich and Istanbul (Turkey) twice a week. Ivo Seehann, Head of Hub Management in Munich at Lufthansa Cargo, provides some insights into current developments and highlights.

Lufthansa Cargo has started a regular (A321F) freighter operation in Munich for the first time. How do you see the development since the first flight in July and what could be the next steps here?

We are very pleased to offer regular freighter connections to and from Munich now. Currently, we serve Istanbul twice a week with our A321F, connecting the city on the Bosporus to our hub in Munich. The connection is very well received by our customers, and the freighter operations, together with Munich Airport, is running very smoothly. Lufthansa Cargo is continuously examining the possibilities of establishing new routes and growing in dynamic market environments.

What are the current developments in your Munich cargo hub?

Lufthansa Cargo's Munich hub continues to grow. This year alone, several brand-new A350 passenger aircraft have been based in Munich. The cargo-friendly A350 is the backbone of Munich's cargo operations. In addition to our extensive network of continental flights, we also offer our Road Feeder Services to and from numerous destinations in Germany and Europe via our Munich cargo hub.

Starting in December, Lufthansa Airlines will resume flights to São Paulo, providing a direct connection to South America. From March 2025, Discover Airlines will operate three long-haul flights that will be integrated into the Lufthansa Cargo network: Calgary, Orlando, and Windhoek. My Lufthansa Cargo team and our service partners are working very hard to manage the growth and serve the peak season within the existing infrastructure.

Is there anything what you particularly would highlight in the cargo sector at Munich Airport?

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the excellent cooperation between all stakeholders in the MUC Cargo community, especially our local customers and partners. Putting this into the center of our action we want to enable business for our customers and offer premium and innovative solutions – with a worldwide presence. We are looking forward to support the development of the airfreight infrastructure at the airport campus, and appreciate the first positive steps from Munich Airport and concerned authorities.
