At the highly respected Routes Europe Marketing Awards 2017 in Belfast, the airport's marketing team ranked number one in the category "Major European Airports" and also won the overall award. It recognizes aviation marketing teams for successful efforts in opening up new routes, attracting airlines and implementing projects. For the Routes Europe Awards, the flight and route planners of the airlines were surveyed on airports' marketing activities. The key factor for high ratings is an airport's ability to attract and retain new airlines and routes.
The jury gave special mention to the fact that Munich offers 173 European destinations – more than any other airport. Equally impressive: 70 new routes operated by 20 different airlines were added last year. Another factor promoting growth was the dynamic development of low-cost traffic in Munich in 2016. As the overall winner, Munich Airport is now eligible for the worldwide award, to be announced at the Worlds Routes Marketing Awards on September 25, 2017 in Barcelona.
