Munich Winter Wonderland

Munich isn’t only worth visiting in the summer! In the cold months of the year, the city turns into a genuine winter wonderland.

If you like it warm, you’ll love Munich’s many shopping centers and malls. The Pasing Arcade, with around 150 shops, is a cozy place to spend a freezing winter day. The Oberpollinger department store in the city’s pedestrian precinct also ensures a uniquely enjoyable shopping experience on seven floors.

Munich also has plenty of culture to experience in the winter. The German Museum in the middle of the River Isar, for example, is the world’s largest science and technology museum. It fascinates young and old with its countless exhibits. If you have the time and interest, there’s nothing to stop you from spending one or more entire days exploring the history of technology here. The city also contains many art museums, including the Old and New Pinakothek, full of inspiring exhibits.

Saunas and indoor swimming pools are other excellent ways for you to warm yourself on frosty days. The Erding Spa tops the list, offering saunas for adults, plus a swimming pool and water slides for the whole family. Central Munich also features pools that are ideal for spending a relaxing afternoon or day. The Müllersche Volksbad, the city’s oldest public pool, includes saunas and massages.

When it’s already cold in Munich and then starts snowing, it’s time to grab your sled! The Alps don’t have a monopoly on excellent slopes; central Munich also boasts many hills that are ideal for sledding. And it doesn’t get much better than the Monopterus in the English Garden and some of the hills in the Olympic Park.

Munich hosts about 40 Christmas markets, all of which put visitors in a cheery holiday mood.

An absolute must-do is the big Christmas market on Karlsplatz. There’s a huge outdoor ice skating area right in the middle of it. Everyone is guaranteed to have a great time! Visitors also love the Christmas market in the Residenz for its magical ambiance. You’ll find row after row of small booths selling sweet and hearty taste treats and handicrafts. The hours pass quickly here while browsing all the wares.

The 9,000-liter Feuerzangenbowle at the Isartor is said to be the world’s largest. This enormous bowl is used between December and January to make a special Christmas punch: first it’s filled with red wine, lemons, oranges and cinnamon sticks. Then a huge sugar cone is drenched in rum, held over it and set on fire. The sugar slowly caramelizes and drips into the wine mixture. Yum!

One thing is for sure: winter in Munich is never boring! Come let yourself be enchanted by a genuine winter wonderland.
